India is the world’s second most populous nation and currently the sixth largest economy with a growth rate of 7.5%, exceeding China’s 6.5%. As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, this growth presents a broad range of international business opportunities for bilateral trade with Australia.
India is a country in transition with a middle class of approximately 300 million that is driving demand for premium products and services. The middle class households is likely to more than double to approximately 550 million individuals by 2025, while the GDP growth rate is projected to continue with India drawing level with the USA by 2050.
India is poised to maintain its position as a key global renewables market, with concerted government programs driving growth across 20 sectors (e.g. ‘Made in India Program’). Progressive policies of the Indian government include national tax reform to simply the process of movement of goods at local and international levels.
The Australia India two-way trade in goods and services has grown in value from $6.8 billion in FY2003-04 to $14.8 billion in FY2013-14, with an estimated potential of exceeding $100 billion, hence matching the Australia China trade.
The agriculture, energy, manufacturing, mining, education and services sectors and are key opportunity sectors for Australia.
Australian businesses can take the first mover advantage of the following FTA’s that are not available to either the European Union or USA.
Free Trade Agreement negotiations to that was launched in May 2011and are nearing conclusion, and
Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

Facilitator and Presenter – Ian Bennett, Senior Manager International Trade
Ian has been helping Australian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) achieve offshore success for over 26 years, by providing trade advice, assisting with strategy development, export planning and implementation and getting connected in overseas markets.
He has good knowledge of offshore investment strategies and assists in both exporting and importing for SMEs.
Ian has an in-depth understanding of Australia's many free trade agreements which assist both importers and exporters and how to maximise the benefits of these agreements.
Ian has over 15 years’ experience working in Singapore where he managed an Australian company involved in the marketing and distribution of industrial products through South East Asia. He also worked for two years in Indonesia in the shipping industry.
Prior to moving to Singapore he held a number of management positions in procurement, sales, marketing and regional territory management.
Presenter: SP Joshi, India Based, NSW Business Chamber India Country Manager
SP Joshi is Australian Business Consulting and Solutions' senior advisor in New Delhi. Joshi has a successful background in marketing and sales of fine chemicals, innovative engineering products, automobiles, and industrial products.
Most recently, he was the Vice President of Degussa AG (India), a major German fine chemicals company. His previous senior management posts include Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, and Madras Cement Ltd. Joshi's areas of expertise include marketing, sales, distributor management and joint venture and subcontract manufacturing set up.
He is also a part-time visiting lecturer in marketing and business development at two leading New Delhi business schools. His most recent projects for Australian clients have focused on food and beverage, retail, FMCG and light engineering covering in depth market analysis, supply chain analysis, distributorship set up, due diligence and joint venture set up.
Joshi has assisted a wide range of companies to enter the India market from Singapore, Germany, Canada and Australia. Aided by a lawyer specialised in joint venture set up, an accountant specialised in transfer tax issues and three researchers and business analysts, Joshi has substantial networks across government agencies and private industry.
