Workforce development in the Aged Care and  Community Services industry sector - Safety Leadership Program

An innovative new Safety Leadership Program has been delivered through a partnership between the NSW Business Chamber, Australian Business
Training Solutions as the Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and Blue Care. This partnership was supported by the National VET E-earning Strategy*, aimed at strengthening the Australian training sector’s use of new learning technologies, and improving the skill levels of the
Australian workforce.

The primary partner organisation, Blue Care, is one of Australia’s leading service providers with 8200 staff and 2300 volunteers, assisting people with services in people’s homes, in the community and in its residential aged care facilities and retirement living villages.

Increased accessibility to workforce and professional development through e-learning in the area of work health and safety training was the key focus of the program. Three units of competency from the Nationally Recognised Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety were delivered through a flexible learning model into regional, rural, remote and metropolitan areas of QLD and Northern NSW.

Key activities and outcomes of the blended program

• 170 enrolments with over 70% of current enrolments completing the program so far.
• Three live online training sessions introducing the program, and five live online question and answer sessions.
• Five on demand online training sessions delivering key skills and knowledge required to meet the outcomes of the nationally recognised units of competency.
• Combination of online and written assessments, and an individual or group activity to apply the learnings back at the workplace.
• Engagement of regional and remote learners by providing a cost and time efficient workforce development solution.
